Brown stallion — 15.1 HH — Foaled 1982 — ASH SM-146457
Haydon Drawn proved one of those “Once in a Life Time Horses” if you are ever fortunate enough to be blessed with one. In 1995 the Stud through Jamie Inglis were able to purchase the Australian Champion Three Year Old Drawn. It proved an inspired decision.
He was a greatly admired horse, being the perfect thoroughbred polo/stock horse type, a solid brown TB stallion standing only 15.1hh with a great temperament, good action and being just so athletic. His stock had proved too small for racing and he represented a real coup for the polo/stock horse world.
When he was inspected for the stud book by Ken Brown he remarked “a beautiful old fashioned stock horse”. His stud groom use to hop on him bareback and cantered him down and back to his paddock right through the breeding season. He was exceptional in the use of his hind legs. He passed this extraordinary ability onto his stock so that the higher level they performed at, the better they got.
This was highlighted in the 2010 Gold Cup final at Cowdray Park, UK when the two opposing 10 goal players both played horses by Drawn in three chukkas with Adolfo Cambiaso on Haydon Angel Jewel and Sapo Caset on Haydon Scud. Haydon Olivia 11 also played many seasons in the UK and Spain for 8 goaler Ale Mussio and also often played against Haydon Angel Jewel and Haydon Scud.
Rarely do such sires come along in your lifetime and we have made sure we have his blood right through the stud. Many of his daughters have been retained as well as one of his best son’s Haydon Nightwatch.
Drawn was a good horse to ride with the added bonus of being one of the best horses on the track of his generation, breaking a track record winning the Group One Rosehill Guineas. He was awarded Australian Champion Three Year Old in 1986 & to quote: “Rarely has the Australian turf seen such a courageous horse. Drawn was recognised for his class, courage and toughness. He started in 23 stakes races either winning or being placed in 13.”
He was a sire with outstanding ability, quality, conformation, action and temperament. Being by Star Shower from Penny Draw, he combines the bloodlines of Midstream (sire of Sundown), Pipe of Peace, Alycidon, Wilkes and Star Kingdom.
Drawn has such an outstanding playing pedigree as he was a very similar type to his sire, the unbeaten Champion Australian 2 YO Star Shower whose grandmother was by Champion sire Wilkes. Star Shower was by the Champion Star of Heaven, who was a full brother to Champion sire Biscay, by the legendary Star Kingdom. Drawn’s dam line is regarded as being one of the finest in the stud book. His dam Penny Draw brings in the stamina influence of Alycidon and her dam Long Draw is by Champion Pipe of Peace, described in the English Bloodstock Review as “A horse of perfect symmetry with a well set head and neck.” Long Draw also produced the Champions Better Draw and Full on Aces. Her dam Midwise was by leading sire Midstream, who was the sire of influential polo sire Sundown. His Star Kingdom sire line goes back through the stud book to Hyperion, Gainsborough, Bay Ronald, Eclipse to the original Darley Arabian.
