Haydon Nightwatch was a quality brown stallion with a star and thin blaze. He stood 15.2hh, was a very athletic horse with good temperament and proven at polo. He was retained by the stud as a replacement stallion for his renowned sire Haydon Drawn. He was bred on the same successful cross of Haydon Drawn/Haydon Never Doubt as Haydon Angel Jewel, Haydon Celestial, Haydon Rosecup, Haydon Blush, etc and his full sisters Haydon Moonlight and Haydon Dawnlight.

His full sister Haydon Moonlight was a unique mare. She was a classic type and so trainable that she excelled as a three old winning the Champion Novice at Scone in 2000 before playing overseas, all as a three year old.

Her other full sister Haydon Dawnlight, again a very good looking mare, was retained as a broodmare.

Nightwatch’s half sister Haydon Night Beam won Champion Yearling at Scone. She was then top priced filly at the ASH National Yearling Sale before going on to be very successful in futurities and in the show ring with Maxine Brooks.

 

Nightwatch was from the proven old Bloomfield performance Thora family with Haydon Nightlight’s half brother Haydon Dancer the winner of the Nat Buchanan Trophy in 1997.

Haydon Nightwatch has an exceptional pedigree combining Haydon Drawn with the proven playing lines of Haydon Never Doubt, Sundown and Young Valais.

Haydon Nightwatch progeny include the very special polo and polocrosse gelding Haydon Tartan, Haydon Apollo winner of his first polocrosse award in 2011 at his 2nd carnival and won Rookie Horse of the Year, going onto play four Nationals, BPP award winner Haydon Kylie sold to WA, the top playing mares Haydon Nightfall, Haydon Pandora, Haydon Raindrop, Haydon Night Breeze,  Haydon Roseleaf, Haydon Secret Night, Haydon Silent Night, Haydon Kylie, Haydon Magdalena, Swirl and others Haydon Night Symphony, Haydon Night Rose, Haydon July, etc. Haydon Saffron Jewel is proving one of the stud’s better broodmares.

Six Nightwatch colts were sold at 2011 colt sale – Haydon Endeavour and top priced colt purchased by Rosebrook Stud Haydon Orbital (both full brothers to Haydon Satellite), Haydon Saturn, Haydon Maestro, Haydon Night Stream and Haydon Tartan’s full brother Haydon Blackwatch.

Haydon Nightwatch’s 33 progeny showed a special quality with good conformation, temperament and above all ability.

Haydon Nightwatch was shaping up to be an even better stallion than his illustrious sire Haydon Drawn as he also has the benefit of the Never Doubt influence and the long line of Thora Family females.

Tragedy struck during a summer storm in December 2011 when Haydon Nightwatch was under a she oak when it was hit by lightning. He had established himself as a top sire already by the age of ten and he was unable to continue to fulfil his destiny. At such a young age he had proven himself playing and had proven himself as a sire…all the hard work had been done and it was all ahead of him.
