Just Fred was the ideal, versatile stallion. He could win the open campdraft, the led class and the working class.
He was so well bred, being by Young Valais out of the lovely mare Rose. He was purchased as a sire by the Cowdray Family from FB (Fred) Haydon. The story goes that when he was classified they ask what do you called him and they said “Just Fred” after his breeder so that is how he got his official registered name!
When he as campaigned by Darryl Bridge, he was regarded always as the one you had to beat. He won numerous campdrafts, led and working classes. He was known for his remarkable temperament, was just so easy and well manner to cart about. These traits were past onto his 70 registered progeny. His daughter Cardonis Breeze FM HSH is the dam of one of the all time great mares Hazelwood Romance and her son Hazelwood Conman one of the significant sires in the stud book with over 1,200 registered progeny.
Just Fred’s dam Rose was by Rosewing II who was the sire of the renowned Hayes and Cameron’s Simmer, one of the dominant horses of his time , winning numerous open campdrafts and champion hacks. Her mother was an exceptional polo mare but due to being blinded in one eye as a foal, Rose was only used as a broodmare. She was a mare of exceptional conformation with a long rein and produced many good foals, including;
-LUBRA by Bobbed Steel, Champion Hack at Brisbane Exhibition;
-ROSETTA by Bobbed Steel, played well and was dam of STAR and ROSALEA a top polo mare;
-BAMBI by Young Valais, a brilliant all-round performance mare winning Champion polo pony awards, show jumping and sporting events;
-GYPSEY I by Young Valais, dam of GYPSEY II Australian Cutting Horse Champion in 1969.
-JUST FRED by Young Valais sold as a sire to The Cowdrey’s, a top campdraft performer, winner of many working stock horse classes and sire of many good polo ponies and performance horses, including the dam of HAZELWOOD ROMANCE;
These three full brothers and sisters Haydon Bambi, Haydon Gypsey and Just Fred all had a remarkable impact.
* Haydon Bambi, was Champion at the then prestigious Northern Challenge Polo Cup Quirindi twice in 1966 and 1967 and also at Gunnedah in 1966. She was chosen to be played by HRH the Prince of Wales at Scone in 1966. An outstanding all round mare, excelling in pony club events, hacking, flag and bending, campdrafting, cutting, roping and especially jumping ridden by Lyn Haydon.
* Haydon Gypsey, produced Haydon Gypsey II, the Australian Cutting Horse Champion in 1969. Her daughter Haydon Gypsey Moth won Champion Led Mare at Scone beating Breezette.
* Haydon Just Fred, full brother to Bambi and Gypsey, was a top campdrafter and sire of Cardonis Breeze dam of the legendary Hazelwood Romance the dam of Hazelwood Conman.

There is a long list of winners and progeny by Just Fred including; Hayday a prolific ribbon winner as was Bridges Sovereign out of the Dimray mare Mystery, Red Bank Eclipse, Gretel, Bandi, Grananny Stormy granddam of top polo mare and producer for Al Simson Carmyle Silk, Halls Tennessee dam of Birneys Camilla dam of six progeny, including the sire Birneys Tradition, the Cowdrey Family who owned him had many successful progeny under the Tindaroo prefix like Jessica, Ballerina, Bell, Black Pepper, Crane, Flood, Lady Bird, Larke, Lyre, Nutmeg, Sky, etc, St Elmo Jill, Tammys Charm, Abigail, Angelique, Chinky, Flame, Kitty, Laquitoy, Cassette, Elia, Emma, Mimi, Carousel, Just Robo, Little Girl, Mecca, the Moreduval mares Hyppolyte, Josephine, Phoenix, Pixie, etc, Prima, Bess, and Anita.
