Techrico was injured before he got to race and initially stood at Ilala Stud where he sired 24 winners. He was spotted there by Peter & Alison and they were immediately taken by his presence, beautiful head, great hindquarter, forward stifle, great walk and movement. You nearly had to run to keep up when he was walking.
The stud sent mares to him in 2008 purchasing him in 2010. He is certainly putting quality and type into his progeny. He is a very well conformed, balanced stallion, 15.2 HH, bay with a blaze, has a picture perfect head, powerful hindquarters and good hard feet. He can walk a 100 miles an hour. His full brother Zabarra won four races.
Techrico is classically bred, by Champion sire Zabeel from Champion Two year mare Vaindarra. Zabeel has sired a remarkable 1092 winners, an incredible 46 Group 1 winners, 163 Stakes winners, 3 Melbourne Cup winners (Efficient, Jezabeel & Might and Power), 3 Caulfield Cup winners and 4 Cox Plates winners (Octagonal, Savabeel, Might and Power & Maldivian). His sons at stud include Octagonal the sire of Champion horse and leading sire Lonhro, Savabeel and Reset. Most of his son’s have been gelded and trained on for a long staying career. That makes it all the more fortunate to have been able to acquire Techrico, also given his sire stood at a service fee of $100,000 and with winners of nearly $200m. Zabeel is from the top Nureyev mare Lady Giselle. His daughters are also really breeding well with Zabeel achieving Champion Broodmare sire status being the damsire of 1433 winners.
Zabeel-many judges rated him as hard to fault.
Zabeel has not only been dominant on the track with over a 1,040 winners but his stock have done so well after their racing careers have finished in other pursuits. They have done extraordinary well. They have won multiple Barastoc Horse of the Year and Garryowens. Xlerate won both the Barastoc Horse of the Year and the Garryowen and WP Imagine winning the Garryowen. Crosswind (SLM Mercedes) trained by Guy Walter who was named after his grandfather Lt Guy Haydon, won the 2017 Garryowen. He has since gone to win the 2018 Barastoc Horse of the Year. Precedence trained by Bart Cummings had 10 wins reaping $2m before a successful show career.
Techrico’s dam Vaindarra won the Silver, Gimcrack and Riesling Stakes and was awarded Champion Two Year Old Filly, after running second in the GI Golden Slipper. Vaindarra’s daughter by Lunchtime, Vanity Time produced Regal Banquet who made history winning Supreme ANSA Exhibit for three consecutive years at the Sydney RAS and winning Champion Stallion for the sixth time in 2017 at the Brisbane Royal Show (EKKA), four times as Supreme Champion.
Her mother High Quality was a full sister to the Champion racehorse Ricochet, who won the Epsom, George Main, Newmarket, Theo Marks, Warwick and Delany Quality. Vaindarra’s sire Vain is recognized as one of the great turf performers and was a Champion Sire.
Techrico has an exceptional temperament which was evident when he was taken to polo by Ilala Stud and played young horse chukkas, without hardly any preparation or riding beforehand.
His pedigree introduces much sought after staying blood through Zabeel, combined with Northern Dancer, Star Kingdom, Wilkes, Djebel and Brueghel.
